It's one thing to talk about rainforest destruction and another to do
something about it. Through Target Earth International and Jaguar Creek,
hundreds of individuals, Sunday school classes and youth groups raised money to
buy Belizean rainforest to preserve it.
The result is 3400 acres saved called the Eden Conservancy and 700 acres
saved called the Jaguar Creek Reserve.
The Eden Conservancy
These 3400 acres protect lush tropical
forest and fog shrouded peaks that connect the Sibun Forest Reserve and Blue
Hole National Park. This is a part of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor
Project, a multi-national and multi-organizational effort to provide habitat for
wildlife now and in the future. This land was bought with the intention of
giving it to the Belize Audubon Society (BAS) to be managed along with Blue Hole
National Park, effectively expanding the park seven times.
We are in the process of handing over the
property to the BAS and will assist them in research and management efforts in
regards to the two parcels as best we can.
Jaguar Creek Reserve
Our facility is in the midst of our own
private jungle reserve of 700 acres so there is plenty of property to explore. Boa Constrictors, Howler Monkeys
and Keel-billed Toucans call this home.
A few trails wander through parts of it - but most of it has been undisturbed
for many years. The only permanent water, Jaguar Creek, flows out of a
cave, meanders through jungle and then goes back underground.
First we bought the 10 acres that the
buildings sit on, then we added 190 acres for a buffer. As a part of the
Eden Conservancy, 500 acres that were paid for, but were not able to be used in the
Eden Conservancy parcel were added to the Jaguar Creek Reserve.
