Summer Institute on Sustainable Development
2006 Internship Program with Target Earth
Target Earth has designed a specialized internship program for the summer of 2006. It is an
exciting 6-week intensive project that will run from June 2, 2006 through July 13, 2006. The program will be
based out of Target Earth's jungle environmental center, Jaguar Creek, Belize (www.jaguarcreek.org). The program is a mix of individual placements, group field trips, focused classroom time, community life (fun and intense!) and ethical reflection with other interns.
Through the Summer Institute on Sustainable Development, interns will:

- gain practical and theoretical understanding of community based sustainable development work
- gain personal volunteer experience with a local community development organization
- be challenged toward personal transformation while wrestling with issues of consumption, identity, voice and justice
Placement opportunities are varied, including work with watersheds, local community centers, health, government, NGOs and churches. Interns choose the placement that best fits their interests. Interns spend 120 hours total in a supervised placement. The balance of the time is devoted to the group field trips, classroom time, home-stays and community life. All interns get a free day each week to pursue personal interests, play or sleep.
The first week of the program is organized around theoretical concepts, team building and orientation. Week two is village based home-stays where each intern is assigned to a village home (usually Mayan) for a cultural immersion and focus on the context where sustainability takes place. The last month is organized around a weekly routine of internship placements (32 hours per week), workshops and team exercises.
The application due date is March 15, 2006. The total cost of the six-week Summer Institute on Sustainable Development is $1,800.00 US. That fee includes program costs in Belize, including room and board at Jaguar Creek (the facility is powered by solar panels and is an experimental center in sustainable living), all field trips and placement expenses. Students are responsible for their airfare to and from Belize, medical costs, passports, textbooks and school supplies, personal care products, laundry costs, and personal spending money. An application fee of $75.00 US payable to Jaguar Creek is due with the application (it applies to the total fee) and the balance is due to Jaguar Creek on May 3rd
We hope you can join us at the Summer Institute on Sustainable Development. An
